Tania, I am writing a book about my grandfather who was a commercial artist 1910-1943. Among other media, he worked in scratchboard. Your article has been very helpful in understanding the medium. May I please have your permission to reprint two paragraphs and your illustration of the layers in my book? How would you like the citation to read?

He was an illustrator for the Grit newspaper and did a lot of advertising. He often worked for engraving companies, mostly photo-engraving 1920-1943. I have been trying to understand the relationship (if any) beween his scratchboard work and engraving. Might I have your “real” email address to send you a section of the current draft and jpg’s of the two pieces on scratchboard and ask you to tell me what you see?

Just wanted to say I am a huge Virgil Finlay fan and totally agree that his ‘craftsmanship’ is something that we could all take a lesson from. And that craft was rendered without a photoshop tool in sight.
