Just in case you think I’ve been lazy over the past week… here’s what I’ve been up to: meet Floyd, a Mastiff (Bull Mastiff, I believe?) who is owned by family friends. He’s a handsome boy to be sure. I used a combination of pin and X-acto blades on this portrait. Floyd’s fur was something of a challenge. I’ve only met two other mastiffs in real life, and both had short, dense, slightly abrasive coats - I’ve never done fur quite like this before. I did one light layer with the pin and then a second layer over that with the X-acto blade. The texture on his muzzle was also a challenge because it was a mix of fine fur and skin. But I love, love, loved doing the wrinkles over his forehead!! I think they really add character.

Well, now that I’m done Floyd, it’s back to my Western series. See you back here in a couple days with an update.

I haven’t signed the board yet, but pending final approval from the owner, I have finished Vinnie the Standard Poodle’s portrait:

Closer still. I have the coat texture complete, but still have a ways to go with his top knot. Oh, and by-the-way this one’s going to be coloured: eyes and collar. I’ve sent a high resolution copy to the owner for approval. In the meantime, it’s back up to the studio to finish his top knot.

Just a quick update: I think Vinnie’s face and ears are pretty much done, but I have some work to do on his neck, shoulders and top knot. So much fur… so little time.

Here’s a quick peek at my latest pet portrait: Vinnie, a black Standard Poodle. I’ll be back later in the week with an update.
