Floyd, Mastiff. Scratchboard, 8 x 10 in. Copyright 2008, Tania Nault.
Just in case you think I’ve been lazy over the past week… here’s what I’ve been up to: meet Floyd, a Mastiff (Bull Mastiff, I believe?) who is owned by family friends. He’s a handsome boy to be sure. I used a combination of pin and X-acto blades on this portrait. Floyd’s fur was something of a challenge. I’ve only met two other mastiffs in real life, and both had short, dense, slightly abrasive coats – I’ve never done fur quite like this before. I did one light layer with the pin and then a second layer over that with the X-acto blade. The texture on his muzzle was also a challenge because it was a mix of fine fur and skin. But I love, love, loved doing the wrinkles over his forehead!! I think they really add character.
Well, now that I’m done Floyd, it’s back to my Western series. See you back here in a couple days with an update.
Hi Tania,
He features a great expression often connected to the breed.
The lighting is quite well depicted and the hair seems convincingly smooth.
Kind regards,
José
Thanks, José, I appreciate the compliment.
I read your interview with Cathy Sheeter for “Scratching the Surface: International Scratchboard Art Show” on your blog, theartinquirer.blogspot.com – great interview!
